Volunteer of the Month: Captain Jeff Nevels
Memphis Union Mission is pleased to recognize Captain Jeff Nevels as our October Volunteer of the Month.
Jeff, a captain in the United States Navy, has been volunteering at our Wright Transitional House for over five years.
His involvement follows a long-standing tradition of service within his family.
"Being in the military, we've moved quite a bit," says Jeff. "Wherever we've gone, we've sought to get involved in volunteering for myself and to train my kids in service."
Five years ago, Jeff came to the Mission's emergency shelter with his church, Grace Evan, to help serve meals during Thanksgiving.
Through that visit, Jeff was introduced to Rogers Heffner, who runs the transitional phase of our men's recovery program. Soon after, Jeff began leading the men in Bible study each Tuesday night, as he's been doing since then.
"The most enjoyable part is seeing men hungry for the Word of God," says Jeff. "There is always a core of men who are hungry to learn, and I enjoy
the fellowship."
But Jeff is more than just a teacher. He is a mentor to these men who are working full time and preparing to transition out on their own.
He also helps organize special events for the men in transition, including graduation ceremonies and Christmas parties.
Captain Jeff Nevels is truly a servant leader and has been a tremendous blessing to the men in the transitional phase of the men's program, and this is why he is our October volunteer of the month.
